Living with natural hazards

In the  brochure "Leben mit Naturgefahren” (living with natural hazards) you will find all relevant information on the natural disasters occurring in Austria, which damage they might cause and what you could do by yourself in order to avoid even worse damage.

Furthermore the competent institutions in charge of protection and help in case of natural disasters and the respective contact data are listed as well.

Important background information on the development and the forms of natural hazards, such as floods, mudflows, rock fall, slides and avalanches, tells you what exactly could happen and how to behave best in hazardous situations. However, it is important to get sufficiently informed and to take important preventive measures even at the time of the purchase / the construction of the house and its equipment, in particular in hazard areas. Particularly endangered zones should be kept free from constructions and other types of higher-level utilisation.

Private precautions constitute an important part of disaster control in order to reduce or even to avoid damage; for prevention is better than cure.

The Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism (BMNT) implements 2000 projects and measures for the protection against natural hazards all over Austria every year. The Austrian Hydrographic Service operates a well-functioning measuring network in order to be able to inform about discharges and floods.

Further information on the protection against natural hazards is available here.
